How to Quit Your Job?

By Margaret Heffernan

I remember the first time I had to tell my boss I was leaving. After 13 years with the same firm, I’d become fed up, frustrated and bored. My new job had higher status, more autonomy and a lot more money. With my ego at an all-time high, I couldn’t wait to go in and tell my boss — with the full panoply of vindictive glory — that I was leaving to work for a competitor who truly appreciated me.

Thank god a friend stopped me.

Most people have fantasies of the triumphant exit. Especially if it’s taken you too long to leave a dead-end job, the delight in escape can be hard to mask. But it’s vitally important. Why?

However satisfying the immediate thrill of sticking it to your boss, you need to remember that your paths may well cross again. Life is long and the world isn’t nearly as big as you might imagine. I’ve crossed oceans and changed industries only to find myself at a conference table with former colleagues. No one wants to spend a career dodging unnecessarily offended co-workers.

Moreover, every career is a reputation. That reputation isn’t built on big events but on thousands of small conversations, exchanges, meetings and phone calls. However frustrated you may have been, if people think well of you, it’s a shame to waste that asset for a moment’s delight. Keep your reputation; you’ll need it.

This pertains to exit interviews, too. Savvy executives know that this is not the moment for revenge. If your co-workers or supervisors were truly incompetent, you should have said or done something earlier. Leave it for the exit interview and your integrity will be shot. At best, you look like a coward, at worst deceitful. Lambasting everyone you’ve worked with won’t fix the company, it will merely ensure that you never work there again.

When I finally calmed down enough to tell my boss I was leaving, I gave him a bottle of his favorite wine, saying that I didn’t want my exit to leave a bad taste in his mouth. I’d come to understand that how you leave a job defines how you will forever think about what you did and learned there. It can be a chapter in a book that is about success or about failure. But it’s never the end of the story.

The Sinking Ship

I received this thought provoking image in a forwarded email. Look at it and think for a while...

This image accurately depicts what is happening in our country right now. Some of us are just sitting back and relaxing in a time when others in our country are going through a terrible plight.

If we do not wake up and lend a helping hand, rest assured that all of us will sink together!

Why?

On the street I saw a small girl,
Cold and shivering in a thin dress,

With little hope of a decent meal,

I Became angry and said to GOD,

‘Why did you permit this?”

“Why don’t you do something about it?”

For a while GOD said nothing,

That night he replied, quite suddenly,

“I certainly did something about it”.

I made you.

Mayre Maan Hamaisha Sach Nahi Bolti

Blind Trust in the News Channels

By Sarang

Those who watch Heros will be families with the character Matt Parkman who has the ability to read and control the mind of other people. This ability seems so fascinating because it gives total power. You can make people do, feel and believe whatever you want. Yes it is amazing but the fact is that Matt is only fictitious character in a fantasy drama series. Although Matt does not exist but there does exist something much more powerful than him. Matt can control the mind of only a few people at a time but this 'something' can control the minds of millions rather billions.

This 'something' are the news channels. No i am not joking. Even in the fantasy drama series Matt is not able to do what the news channels are doing today. We are all so much addicted to the news channels and we have so much blind faith in them that we believe whatever they feeds us. Every day we listen to the news and perceive the world to be what we are told on the news. We don't even think whether what we are being told is correct or just a bunch of lies. We look at the world from the eyes of news channels. We become scared because the news tells us about terrorist running around, we become angry because the news tells us about the stupid government decisions, we become emotional because news tells us about the poor girl in a distant city without a roof on her head...

Don't jump to conclusions. Don't assume. Don't blindly trust whatever you are being told. Don't be gullible. Use your mind. Open your eyes and check the facts. Do some research. Use your own judgment to decide what is right and what is wrong. Don't just sit in front of the new channels like a retard and let them feed thoughts and emotions into you. Don't accept everything you are being told. Just because it is being told on TV does not make it the truth.

Think and validate the truth before concluding something. I hope you don't end up like the old lady:

One afternoon, an old lady, laden with shopping, noticed two small boys on the front step of a house. With their bags and uniforms they were obviously going home after school. They were on tip-toe trying to reach the door-bell with a stick.

"Poor little lads, they can't get in," she thought, "Parents these days just don't seem to care."

So she marched up the path, reached over the boys and gave the bell a long firm push.

The surprised boys turned around and screamed "Quick, run!" and promptly disappeared over the garden wall.

Where are Unity, Faith and Discipline?

By Sarang

This cartoon was published in Daily Times by Mr Zahoor. It didn't make me laugh, it didn't make me cry, but it did make me think.

On April 12th 1948, at Islamia College Peshawar Quaid-e-Azam gave a speech from which every Pakistani remembers his famous words "Unity, Faith and Discipline". His sentence was:

"The success of our achievements will depend upon our unity, discipline and faith not only in ourselves but in God who determines the destinies of peoples and nations."

Unfortunately in the sorry state of affairs today, we don't have unity, we certainly are not disciplined and we are becoming faithless.

We as a nation do not have any unity. We are divided in every way possible. There is a provincial divide, there is a religious divide, there is financial status divide, there is ethnic divide, there is lingual divide. We are divided into infinite pieces. Unity seem to be in books only. Where is the unity that we showed as a nation in 1947? Where are the leaders who united us under one flag? Where are the people who were willing to lay down their lives for this nation? Why is there hate every where? Why pathan, punjabi, sindhi, blochi... why not just Pakistanis? Why shia, sunni... why not just Muslims?

We do have faith but not the way Quaid intended. We put all our faith in US to pull us out of our troubles. We have more faith in the words of a US president than our own leaders. We call ourselves Muslims without knowing the first thing about Islam. Everyone is keen to implement his/her own version. We feel proud to be called liberal and open minded while feel embarrassed if called pious and religious. Every Tom, Dick and Harry among us considers him/herself to be a religious expert without even reading the Holy Quran.

What to say about discipline. We are a mess. Standing in a line seems insulting to us so we prefer to jump over each other to reach the counter first. In this struggle we don't care about who was there first. We consider it the survival of the fittest and don't hesitate in pushing and pulling the weak ones. While driving on a two lane road we make 3 or 4 lanes. We are so impatient that we cant even wait for the traffic signal to turn green. Following rules and regulation seems degrading to us so we adopt illegal means to expedite our work. We are an impatient nation who cant wait for their turn.

The way i see it, Unity, Faith and Discipline are not in graves rather they are on hospital beds waiting to be cured. Although they are not in good condition at this time but they can improve if we put our hearts to it. They need our help. Each one of us has to contribute. Please start thinking about what YOU can do to help. Don't wait for others and start doing something even at individual level. Lets unite for this cause, lets discipline ourselves and have faith in ourselves. We can make this nation the greatest in the world if we all sincerely start contributing. Please do something to save Unity, Faith and Discipline before it is too late.

One More Day With Your Loved Ones

By Sarang

The actual origin of this poem is unknown . It has been floating on the internet for years with different stories. The theme of the stories is that this poem was written by a father of a young girl who was diagnosed with a fatal illness.

TO MY CHILD

Just for this morning, I am going to
smile when I see your face and laugh
when I feel like crying.

Just for this morning, I will let you
choose what you want to wear,
and smile and say how perfect it is.

Just for this morning, I am going to step
over the laundry and pick you up and take you to
the park to play.

Just for this morning, I will leave the
dishes in the sink, and let you teach me how to put
that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug
the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with
you in the backyard and blow bubbles.

Just for this afternoon, I will not yell
once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and
whine for the ice cream truck, and I will buy you one
if he comes by.

Just for this afternoon, I won't worry
about what you are going to be when you grow up, or
second guess every decision I have made where you are
concerned..

Just for this afternoon, I will let you
help me bake cookies, and I won't stand over you
trying to fix them.

Just for this afternoon, I will take us
to McDonald's and buy us both a Happy Meal so you can
have both toys.

Just for this evening, I will hold you in
my arms and tell you a story about how you were
born and how much I love you.

Just for this evening, I will let you
splash in the tub and not get angry.

Just for this evening, I will let you
stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.

Just for this evening, I will snuggle
beside you for hours, and miss my favourite TV shows.

Just for this evening when I run my
finger through your hair as you pray, I will simply be
grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given.

I will think about the mothers and
fathers who are searching for their missing children, the
mothers and fathers who are visiting their children's
graves instead of their bedrooms. The mothers
and fathers who are in hospital rooms
watching their children suffer senselessly and screaming
inside that little body

And when I kiss you goodnight I will hold
you a little tighter, a little longer. It is then,
that I will thank God for you, and ask him for
nothing, except one more day...

This poem reminds us that there is more to life than our so called busy routine. We must not wait for such a tragedy to shake us out of our mundane life. We must open our eyes to our loved ones. We must cherish each and every day of our lives with them. We must show our love and appreciation to the ones who matter. Don't assume that they already know. Don't wait for them to express their feelings first.

Don't miss a chance and give a big hug to your mother. Hold her tight and let her know how precious she is for you. Don't miss a chance to play with your children. Don't miss a chance to spend time with your siblings. Give the precious gift of time to your loved ones. Let them know that you care... not just by your actions but also with your words.

You are Important - Never Underestimate Yourself

By Sarang

Every human being is unique and special. Never underestimate yourself. Life becomes a mess if you ignore the great gifts that God has blessed you with and destroy your life craving for what others have.

Explore your own potentials before starting complaining like a looser about what others have and you don't. You are special you just need to open you eyes and realize what makes you special. Never give up and never ever surrender. If you need some inspiration then go and watch the video i have sharing in my post "Never Loose Hope - Never Give Up". Stop whining and make something of your life.

I liked this old Chinese fable which very beautifully highlights this point.

CRACKED POT

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water, at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.” The old woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side?” “That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it’s the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You’ve just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

SO, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!

Yaar Na Rakhya Raazi

By Sarang

In your life your priorities should be straight. You should know what matters the most in your life and do whatever you can for that. Don't waste your life in useless and false pursuits. Don't ignore the important things in your life.Focus on what matters.

Bhullay Shah a very famous sufi poet says the following:
Parh parh kitabaan ilm diyan tu naam rakh liya qaazi
Hath vich pharrh kay talvaar tu naam rakh liya ghazi
Makkay Madinay ghoom aaya tay naam rakh liya haaji
Bhullay Shah hasil ki kita je tu yaar na rakhaya raazi
A very crude translation of this is that
You read some books and you claimed the title of a scholar
Took a sword in you hand and you claimed the title of a holy warrior
Went to Makkah and Madina and you claimed the title of Haji
Bhullay Shah what did you gained if you didnt keep your friend happy

Never Loose Hope - Never Give Up

By Sarang

You will not be successful in everything you do in life. There will be occasions when you will fail. Remember that failing is not the end of the world. Learn from you experience and try again... and again... and again. You don't really loose if you grasp the lesson from the experience. At the end of every attempt you will be better than before. Never loose hope and never give up. Be positive and stay positive.

Thomas Edison has a number of inventions to his name. He failed in a number of his attempts. Here is what he has to say about it:
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. "

Mary Pickford says:
"If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down"

Napoleon Hill says:
"The majority of men meet with failure because of their lack of persistence in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail."

And last but not the least see what Nick Vujicic has to say. From this short video you can learn a lesson of a life time. Nick was born in Australia without any limbs. Can you imagine how tough his life would have been! Can you imagine the failures he might have seen! Can you imagine the pain he must have seen in his life! I don't think you can. Watch the video and be inspired.

Are you going to finish strong?

Stop Waiting for Super Hero

By Sarang

This post is a sequel of my previous post "Waiting for Super Hero".

I am sorry to disappoint you but the fact is that there is no such thing as a super hero. I know i am breaking your poor little heart by saying this but this is for your own good. You need to come out of this fantasy world and face this truth. IF you want to see some change YOU need to take action yourself . Take practice steps towards the solutions rather than mere pseudo-intellectual discussions. We all love to talk about national and global issues but when it comes to practical implementation most of us chicken out. We look for easy way out rather than practically doing something about it.

Do something practical. Make some positive contribution. There is no harm in thinking big but try to practically start with even something small. Do not even try to solve all of the world problems in one go rather solve one small problem at a time. Choose your battle and then attack.

For example if I have problem with filth in my neighborhood I have two options. I can start blaming and cursing the government in every gathering for not cleaning my neighborhood and continue living in that filth OR I forget about the government and do something about it myself. I can start off by cleaning my street myself or form a small group of volunteers from the neighborhood and divide this task. I can even convince people to give small monthly contribution so that someone is hired to do this job.

You can contribute to any world problem if you really want to. Whether it is global warming, poverty, war, corruption or even traffic mess in your city, you can do your share of work to make it better. The pathetic attitude that "it wont make any difference", "someone else should do it", "why should I do it", "its not my responsibility", "no one else is doing anything about it", "it is governments responsibility" is destroying us slowly. Whatever the problem, think and find out what can you contribute to make it a little better. Many a times you might not be able to make much of a difference but at least you would have tried unlike the other pathetic losers who just talked about it. Unfortunately most of us are lazy bums and hence choose the easier way out which is to talk, talk and just talk.

Only talking is not the solution to the problems. For Gods sake don't just speak of changing the world! Do something positive! Anything at all! No matter how small! Think and choose something right now and put your energies into it until you achieve it. Make small contributions to make this world a better place.

Trying to Make Everyone Happy

By Sarang

You cannot make everyone happy all the time. It is simply not possible. Don't waste your energy in trying to achieve this. Don't spend sleepless nights thinking about what someone said about you or what other might be thinking about you. Stop looking at yourself from others eyes. This is the worst form of mental torture you can inflict on yourself.

Listen to other peoples opinions but make an intelligent decision yourself. Don't blindly jump into something without using your own head first. In your life you will get loads and loads of opinions from people around you because we all love to share our 'wisdom' but you need to decide which opinion to take and which to ignore. Always remember that "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one" so you will always keep getting them on every damn aspect of your life. Remember that some of these opinions can get you out of shit but others can bury you even deeper.

There is an age old fable about father, son and their donkey. A number of variation of this fable are available, all of which have the same moral. I am sharing with you the one written by Lida Brown McMurry in her book "Fifty Famous Fables". Read and try to grasp the lesson.

THE MILLER, HIS SON, AND THEIR DONKEY

"I shall have to sell that donkey of ours," said a miller to his son. "I can not afford to keep him through the winter. I will take him to town this very morning to see if I can find a buyer. You may go with me." In a little while the miller, his son, and the donkey were on their way to town.

They had not gone far when they met some girls going to a party. They were talking and laughing as they went along. One of them said, "Look at that man and boy driving a donkey. One of them surely might ride."

The miller heard what they said, and quickly made his you mount the donkey, while he walked along at its side.

After a while they came to a group of old men who were talking very earnestly. "There," said one, "I was just saying that boys and girls have no respect for the aged. You see it is true in this case. See that boy riding while his old father has to walk."

"Get down, my son," said his father, "and I will ride." So they went on.

They next met some women coming from town. "Why!" they cried, "your poor little boy is nearly tired out. How can you ride and make him walk?" So the miller made his son ride on the donkey behind him.

They were now in town. A man coming down the street called to the miller, "Why do you make your donkey carry such a load? You can carry him better than he can carry you."

At this the miller and his son got off the donkey. They tied the donkey's legs together, turned him over on his back; and began to carry him.

A crowd soon gathered to see the strange sight. As they were crossing a bridge the donkey became frightened at the hooting of the crowd. He broke loose, fell into the river, and was drowned.

The miller was angry and ashamed. He said, "There! I have tried to please everybody and have only made a fool of myself. After this I shall do as I think best and let people say what they will."

Waiting for Super Hero

By Sarang

One day a hero will come and solve all our problems. We just need to sit on our fat asses and keep on waiting for that super hero. He will come and do everything for us from cleaning up the garbage on our streets to stopping the global warming. You name it and he will do that for us. We just need to sit in our cushy chairs and keep talking about the issues that we are facing... Just continue talking, talking and talking because this is what this world needs the most at this point in time. We need a huge army of good-for-nothing pseudo intellectuals who just get together whenever they get a chance and start talking about the issues. Let everything else suffer.. leave everything and just share your wisdom with each other. Show each other that you know more about some petty new issue. Tell everyone that you spent hours listening to some jerk on TV and share an extended summary with everyone you meet. Share your insight about the latest political development in the country. Complain to everyone you meet about the filthy condition of your neighborhood. Tell every soul you can find about the crazy traffic mess. Just talk about it and make sure that you don't do anything practical to fix the issues because that is the task of the super hero. Once in a while for fun you can talk about the practical solutions to the problems but don't forget that the main aim is to talk, talk and talk no actual implementation of the solutions. Your job is just talking so you continue doing that and leave the rest to the super hero.

When Are They Coming For You

By Sarang

Martin Niemöller was a prominent German anti-Nazi. He is the author of the famous poem titled "First they came". There are many variations of this poem available but Martin preferred the following version:

They came first for the Communists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;

And then they came for the trade unionists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;

And then they came for the Jews,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;

And then... they came for me...
And by that time there was no one left to speak up.

Although this poem was written for the Nazi era but the theme very much fits into the current situation of the Muslim world. I don't think more words are required to explain it...

Think and speak for others! Raise your voice against the injustice happening in front of your eyes! Wakeup before it is too late...

Here is a saying of Martin Luther King, Jr:

“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

When will you start thinking?
