Where are Unity, Faith and Discipline?

By Sarang

This cartoon was published in Daily Times by Mr Zahoor. It didn't make me laugh, it didn't make me cry, but it did make me think.

On April 12th 1948, at Islamia College Peshawar Quaid-e-Azam gave a speech from which every Pakistani remembers his famous words "Unity, Faith and Discipline". His sentence was:

"The success of our achievements will depend upon our unity, discipline and faith not only in ourselves but in God who determines the destinies of peoples and nations."

Unfortunately in the sorry state of affairs today, we don't have unity, we certainly are not disciplined and we are becoming faithless.

We as a nation do not have any unity. We are divided in every way possible. There is a provincial divide, there is a religious divide, there is financial status divide, there is ethnic divide, there is lingual divide. We are divided into infinite pieces. Unity seem to be in books only. Where is the unity that we showed as a nation in 1947? Where are the leaders who united us under one flag? Where are the people who were willing to lay down their lives for this nation? Why is there hate every where? Why pathan, punjabi, sindhi, blochi... why not just Pakistanis? Why shia, sunni... why not just Muslims?

We do have faith but not the way Quaid intended. We put all our faith in US to pull us out of our troubles. We have more faith in the words of a US president than our own leaders. We call ourselves Muslims without knowing the first thing about Islam. Everyone is keen to implement his/her own version. We feel proud to be called liberal and open minded while feel embarrassed if called pious and religious. Every Tom, Dick and Harry among us considers him/herself to be a religious expert without even reading the Holy Quran.

What to say about discipline. We are a mess. Standing in a line seems insulting to us so we prefer to jump over each other to reach the counter first. In this struggle we don't care about who was there first. We consider it the survival of the fittest and don't hesitate in pushing and pulling the weak ones. While driving on a two lane road we make 3 or 4 lanes. We are so impatient that we cant even wait for the traffic signal to turn green. Following rules and regulation seems degrading to us so we adopt illegal means to expedite our work. We are an impatient nation who cant wait for their turn.

The way i see it, Unity, Faith and Discipline are not in graves rather they are on hospital beds waiting to be cured. Although they are not in good condition at this time but they can improve if we put our hearts to it. They need our help. Each one of us has to contribute. Please start thinking about what YOU can do to help. Don't wait for others and start doing something even at individual level. Lets unite for this cause, lets discipline ourselves and have faith in ourselves. We can make this nation the greatest in the world if we all sincerely start contributing. Please do something to save Unity, Faith and Discipline before it is too late.
